Just taking time to mindfully brew a cup of tea can quiet my mental chatter and bring me into the present moment, tapping into what I really want and need. A tea meditation doesn’t have to be long - just five minutes whenever we find ourselves lost within our day. As the day gets away from me, I do my best stop and mindfully have a tea meditation each weekday at 2 p.m.
Here is my Super Simple Self Care/SelfLove Tea Meditation:
Simply sit, watch, and wait for the water to boil. Notice your breath as you sit there. Mindfully begin to slow the breath down, allowing your exhales to become longer than your inhales. Inhale perhaps to the count of four and exhale to the count of six or eight. Inhale and exhale through the nose. Exhale as if the breath is cleansing your mind.
Listen to the water pouring into the cup like a bubbling brook. What does the sound remind you of?
Sit and just be while the tea leaves steep in water. Feel the weight and warmth of the teacup in your hands. And inhale the complex aromas. What does the scent remind you of? Lavender? Grass? Continue to focus on your breath. If your mind starts to wander, come back to the warmth and aroma of the tea. Savor the quiet, and relax into it.
Before you even taste the tea, consume it with all of your other senses. Appreciate the rich, deep color of the liquid, the warmth of the cup, the scent of the herbs. Next, sip your tea like it’s the first cup of tea you’ve ever tasted. Feel the warmth of it in your mouth, and notice its taste.
Offer gratitude to the tea, and to yourself for taking the time to practice awareness, self care, and self love.
